A Shocking Railway Accident
A shocking Railway Accident occurred in Kapunda in 1926. J.E. Clarke, who was employed by the railway department, was assisting the guard on the North Kapunda platform. A special train, travelling from Adelaide to Eudunda for the town's show, had pulled into the platform at 7 pm on September 29th. Clarke's job was to collect tickets from travellers. Several travellers disembarked at North Kapunda, and after collecting their tickets, Clarke tried to board the train just as it left the platform.
Unfortunately, Clarke lost his footing,
slipping at the end of the platform and landing on the ground, across the
tracks. The train, still moving, passed over both his legs.
The train was brought to a stop, and staff and passengers assisted to get Clarke
to the nearby Kapunda Hospital. Dr Kiddell had to amputate both of Clarke’s
legs at the knee to save him from his crushing injury.[1]
Due to his intense suffering and loss of blood, Clarke’s condition deteriorated.
He died from his injuries.[2] Clarke, who was just 23 years old, left a
widow and two children.[3]
